Art Sisters

I was fortunate to be able to attend the Silver Bella art retreat in Omaha last weekend with 150 other women.
This was the first time I have ever attended this sort of event. Besides the art projects undertaken, techniques and methods learned, creative swaps exchanged and vintage and handmade creations purchased at the Bella Market...I brought home something else...
something of greater value.

That something was a crystal clear realization that women need other women.

As women we share common life experiences, emotions and needs that only other women can truly understand. We need to be kind and generous to one another.
We need to support one another.

I am not sure why it took me until now to focus and think about this fact but I intend to nourish my relationships with other women as I continue on my life's journey. Cherish your sisters and your girlfriends and reach out to other women in your community and beyond. We need each other.

Perhaps you already knew that!

I've Got The Blues

While visiting the flea market in Florida last week...
...I was enthralled with this table of blue enamelware.
The seller told me that she was selling her parents things and that all these blue items were a part of their large collection.

That kind of made me sad for a minute as I adore the color blue, and in fact have been collecting blue enamelware and blue and white china for many years.

I wondered if someday my collection of blues would be for sale at the flea market.

And then I realized that if someday my things end up at the flea market....well, that would be wonderful....because they would be available for someone else to enjoy and collect.

It would be great to recycle these treasures ...
to give someone else a chance to find them,
love them and display them.

Even though, collecting things will always be a part of who I am...collecting feelings of gratitude, acts of kindness and bits and pieces of generous spirits has now become much more important.
It is lovely to recycle these collections too!

Halloween Inspiration From The Flea Market

Here is a bit of thrifty inspiration for your Halloween decor...
My personal preference is to decorate with a black and white color scheme and odds and ends from the flea market.

This post gets more spooky as we go along so if you are faint of heart...you might want to run away now!

Yes....that's right...this bottle held embalming fluid.
... you just never know what you will find at the flea market!
I have it displayed here with a few of my black Halloween books...
...I like to pick up scary titles when I see them.
(of course, I don't read them ... too much of a fraidy cat).

This is Tallulah Rose, my antique Victorian dress form.
Her black cloth covering is tattered and torn and thus she fits right in my Halloween decor.

white pumpkins and green gourds...

OK...
...now we start getting a bit creepy...

These old lace crochet gloves look like skeleton fingers!

A Victorian brass hand and an old glass door handle when put together create an odd and just a bit scary vignette...
I hope you enjoyed my creepy and spooky Halloween decorations straight from the thrift store and flea market!
Happy Halloween!

Be back next week with more flea market inspiration!

Saturday Vintage Finds

BOO!
Happy Halloween!
Are you all decorated yet?
Do you have your costume ready?

I found this wonderful velvet hat from the 50's
in my Etsy hunt this week!
Trying to figure a way to build a costume around it!

This dreamy 1950's ballerina costume would be mine if it weren't an extra small size!

There are lots more vintage Halloween items to be found on Etsy...
Have fun shopping!

Seasonal Change

I am constantly amazed at the beauty that surrounds us.

...and have been seeking quiet moments to reflect...
and to remember to be grateful.

This autumn there are many changes that are taking place in my life, in the lives of my twenty-something children and in the lives of my elderly parents.

It is all part of the natural rhythm of life.
And really...
...change is a beautiful thing.

I have been singing Stevie Nicks' Landslide...
...it seems to play over and over inside my head.

I read somewhere that she wrote the lyrics when she was young and struggling to become independent.
Her father was ill and she was afraid of the future and the unknown.

I find the lyrics poignant... but not sad.

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life
I don't know

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too

Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down

If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down.

Don't be afraid of changes!
To Everything There Is A Season...
