Life's Soundtrack - Making History

Processed using Kim's peace texture

A couple of years ago, I fell fell in love with this quote from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, it was the basis of one of my favorite blog posts and has stuck with me.  Every time I see it pop up somewhere, whether on a T-shirt, a blog post or a greeting card, I find myself stopping to think about it.  I almost always conclude that I'm unlikely to make real history because I am fairly well behaved and somedays I'm okay with that and others I find myself wanting to do something really outrageous to make my mark on the world.

Because my mission here is to spread a little music love, let's talk about some of the female musicians who have lived up to Ms. Ulrich's quote:

Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGee
Joan Jett - Bad Reputation
Pink - Stupid Girls
Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good

Who did I miss?  Which female artists weren't afraid to push boundaries and in so doing created beautiful music?  Please comment and add some of your favorites to help us put together a communal playlist full of women who made musical history.

The playlist we put together last week is FULL of retro goodness (and hairspray.)  I've had a blast listening to to it, the songs you added were such fun and really brought back some great memories.  I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I have, thanks for your comments and contributions, it is so much fun to get to know you through the songs you love and the memories that go along with them.

Happy Listening

Yes, Joni Mitchell! And how about Billi Holiday, and Sheryl Crow, and for the pushing boundaries part especially, Sinead O'Connor?

What a great list you put together!

first off ... i have to tell you how much i love that quote with your image ... something to tuck away and pull out when i am behaving less than 'well' ... ; )

thanks SO much for putting this playlist together ... it is AWESOME!! groovin to the tunes while popping about this morning ... : )

hmmm ... more 'well-behaved' women artists ... hmmmm ... k.d. lang ... carly simon ... tina turner ...
and how about cher ...

k.d. lang's version of leonard cohen's hallelujah pretty much brings me to my knees every time ... the best was when she sang it at the juno awards in 2005 ... and yes, she is barefoot.

*hugs* jamie!
