Life's Soundtrack - Musical Journey

incoming storm

I have been home for over 3 months.  Which, thanks to my crazy work/travel schedule, is the longest period I've had at home in 5 years.  It's been nice to have so much time with friends and family, but, the wanderer in me is starting to wonder where I'm headed next.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to pack my bags for a few weeks (at least) but I can feel that need for an adventure getting stronger.  To hold me over for a while, I thought I'd get you to help me put together a playlist of songs to take all of us on a journey.

Artists and performers have been recording songs forever about home, places they love and places they dream of going.  Let's put together a list of songs that can take us on a journey even when we don't have the time or cash to plan a trip.  Here are a few of my favorites (and yes, one of the places I want to go include Mr Darcy's estate - I blame my romantic dreams on the love songs you suggested last week.)

Ryan Adams - Oh Sweet Carolina
Duffy - Rockferry
Grace Potter - Paris (Ohh la la)
David Gray - Babylon II
Griffin House - Amsterdam
Jean-Yves Thibaudet - Leaving Netherfield
Band of Horses - Laredo
Death Cab for Cutie - Meet Me at the Equinox

Please take a few minutes and share the songs that take you away in the comments so we can all fly off on a musical journey.  I have a feeling at least a few of you are snowed in today - thinking about these songs may just help you avoid cabin fever.

I was feeling very anti-Valentine's and anti-love last week when I kicked off the Love Songs playlist.  But after listening to your suggestions, I'm swooning and thinking love may just be the most glorious thing ever.  This playlist is now one of my very favorite that we've put together.  I love how diverse it is - songs from the last 50 years, songs from multiple genres and all guaranteed to put you in the mood for love.  Bee completely won me over when she suggested a song (Ion Square) that uses one of my favorite poems as part of the lyrics - e.e. cummings' "I Carry Your Heart with Me."  How can you hear this poem and not fall a little bit in love with love.

Thanks again for your help in putting these playlists together - each week I discover a new song or artist to add to my favorites, and this week you reminded me how gorgeous love can be.  Don't forget to share the songs that take you on a journey in the comments for next week's playlist.

The house that built me. That song takes me back to a place where i didn't grow up but my great grandparents and grandmother did. It has been passed through the family generations and I would love to someday learn of its construction.

Thanks Jamie for putting together the list. It will be great to listen to during the many hours I'm fiddling around with PS. Where does the time go? Also, thank you so much for using my photo! So excited to see it here. :)

I came across an old Jimmy Buffett song, Take Another Road, that I had never heard before. I think you might like it.

Okay - here are some songs that instantly pop into my head:

Lisa Mitchell - Love Letter
Regina Spektor - Hotel Song
The Whitlams - There's No One
The Waifs - London Still
Tricot Machine - Pas Fait En Chocolat
Goyte - Coming Back

Okay, seems like I could write a playlist of my own! I'm going to stop now.

oh I have to add Michael Buble singing I wanna go Home my girls were in Germany and I was in London I think and they sent me a video of themselves in Munich singing this song to me for Mother's Day, they had been away for the best part of a year travelling the world and I was missing them so much. I cannot hear this song now without thinking of them and loving their courage at heading off at such a young age they were 18 and it was the first time away from home. I love this song

Jamie,
THANK YOU!!
I love the music!!! Not only does incredible art inspire me, but music has always touched my soul.

Not to have you give away all your secrets...but how do you place your (or embed) your music playlest into your blog? That is so incredible! I have a couple of blogs, and one of mine I would love to add music others could play as readding the poetry.

Manythansk for hours of wonderful sounds!!

Oh Jamie! I fear that I may be too late in my response to make it for your post tomorrow!

I have listened to the Love mix many times this very busy week and it has put me in a very happy place. It is truly swoon-worthy and completely lovely!

I am not surprised at all to hear you are an e.e. cummings fan as well. Isn't he amazing... his poems give me instant goosebumps!

Anyway... on to those travelling songs. It's -20C and snowing here today, so I am ready to get the heck out of here!

I can't listen to "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane without wanting to go on an awesome road trip.

There's also those lovely songs about places by Sufjan Stevens. I guess Chicago would probably be my favourite...

If you want to take yourself to Iceland, any song by the magnificent Sigur Ros will take you there...

And how about the song Postcards from Italy by Beirut to represent the place I'd most like to be right now... sipping some red wine, eating maginificent food, maybe sitting by the mediterranian... yeah, that sounds about right!

Looking forward to tomorrow's mix which will take me away! :)
