Life's Soundtrack - All About Soundtracks

Photo by flair4hair posted to the I-Studio Flickr Group

Thursday is rapidly becoming one of my favorite days of the week, because I get to check in with all of you.  Last week we had more comments and contributions than ever before - so a huge thank you to everyone for their support, comments and suggestions!

My job typically keeps me busy and out of town.  But I just finished a major project and now find myself back at home and with a TON of vacation to take before the end of the year - and trust me I'm not complaining at all.  I'm enjoying time with family, working on projects at my house, practicing some photo skills I've learned from reading your blogs AND catching up on movies and TV shows I've missed this year.

As I've watched these shows I've been reminded again how important music is to movies and TV.  It sets the mood, gives these shows emotion and depth AND is the theme for our new playlist.  This week I'm asking you to comment with songs you love and have seen/heard in movies or on TV shows.  The song doesn't have to be on an official soundtrack, just something you've seen in a scene and thought was an awesome selection.  I'll get us started (even if my list is going to tell you a lot about the kind of shows I watch and could be embarrassing):

The Avett Brothers - If it's the Beaches (Friday Night Lights - TV version)
Alexi Murdoch - All of My Days (Away We Go)
Mike Doughty - I Hear the Bells (Veronica Mars)
Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You (One Tree Hill)
Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind (The Weary Kind)
The Blind Boys of Alabama - I Will Not Walk Alone (Lost) - I can't get through a listen of this one without being covered in cold-chills.
Alison Krauss - It Doesn't Matter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer - TV version)

Last week I asked you to send in song suggestions to help us build a list full of songs about sun and sunshine that we could use to help us get through the dark days of winter.  As usual, you did not disappoint.   You created a list full of amazing songs, that I know I'll be listening to frequently come January when it feels as if I'll never see sun again.  Below is the playlist with your suggestions added in, talk about a diverse list, we have everything gospel, bluegrass, punk, classical, reggae, pop, rock country, broadway, even a few cover songs in there if you listen carefully.  I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I have.

To play the songs in the Sunny Days Will Come playlist, click on the sideways triangle in the middle of the embedded player above.  You can skip ahead or back by clicking on the > or < on either edge of the player.

I've had several request to create iMixes on iTunes so you can easily find and download the entire list or just select songs you love each week.  Note: a few songs are missing as they weren't in iTunes - which just tells us how awesome and diverse we are.   To access the iMix, click on the link, it will open a new window which in turn will open your iTunes player.  You'll have an option to buy the entire list or just selection songs.

Enjoy listening to the playlist we created last week (above in the embedded YouTube player), while you comment with your song suggestions for our All About Soundtracks playlist.  Any song you remember hearing in a TV Show or Movie that you loved and really set the scene for you can be suggested for next week's list in the comments section.

Happy Listening

Hi Jamie!
Can't wait to get home to listen to the new playlist.
My contribution today is one of my fav songs from a movie, Finding Forrester. Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. Fab version of them both. When I taught in a Montessori school, I used this song each day to signal to the chilren it was time to finish up. We listened to this sweet song each day, and quitely and calmly put away our things and gathered together on the large area rug. Brings back such lovely memories for me.

For the Soundtrack list I would add Hold on You, by Jeff Bridges from the Crazy Heart soundtrack. Great song and amazing movie!

you do such a great job with these lists! There are some many movies and songs I could pick, and if I have time I will come back but the one that first came to mind is: Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter, from the movie Closer. I have to say I didn't really like the movie, but this song has always stayed with me,it is beautiful and haunting.

Hi Jamie,
The Youtube playlist for Sunny songs is incredible. Amazing work Jamie!
Thank you so much for putting them together. Certainly will do the job of cheering us all during this winter.
Soundtracks, I love good soundtracks. Nothing is better than watching a scene and the music fits it perfectly.
I'd like to add a few of my favorites:

An Education; Your heart is black as night by Melody Gardot
Frida; Burn it Blue by Caetano Veloso
Twilight; Bella’s Lullaby by Carter Burwell
Great Expectations; Siren by Tori Amos
Thelma & Louise; House of Hope by Toni Childs
Sex & the City season six Paris; La Belle et le bad boy by MC Solaar

Love all this fabulous music!
Thanks for doing the imixes too.
My ipod was in serious need of an update!

Most of my favorite music songs are from Disney, so I'l just apologize ahead of time.

~Toy Story: You've got a Friend
~Beauty and the Beast: Be Our Guest
~The Jungle Book: Bare Necessities
~The Little Mermaid: Under the Sea
~The Muppets: Ode to Joy

Also - Falling Softly (or is it slowly?) from the Once soundtrack mentioned above is just beautiful, and the entire soundtrack to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is fantastic.

Have a great weekend!
Kelli

Hi Jamie,

You just have no idea how much I look forward to Thursdays and your playlists! I spent most of a grey day in Edmonton on Thursday working on a tedious task at work... but just feeling totally sunny on the inside from that AMAZING playlist! It was so incredible that you posted the Great Lake Swimmers Song from the Edmonton Folk Fest. My office mates were a little surprised when I let out a gasp of "HEY! I was there!" Too cool.

So for this week... you have to know that I am almost as much of a movie junkie as I am a music junkie. So I have lots of movie/music moments that get me super excited! Of course… there’s all the Tarantino stuff… there the classics like Unchained Melody from Ghost… anything from the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack... but here's some other favourites!

1. Ending of Fight Club – the buildings crashing all around them as the Pixies “Where is my Mind” is playing… an absolutely mind-blowing moment… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxYikbiB0nY&feature=related)

2. Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s… how can you not just fall in love with her? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOByH_iOn88)

3. From the movie Amelie, perhaps my favourite movie moment ever… the combination of the scenery, music, and dialogue here is simply perfect. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S0LNGA2hp8).

4. Ending of Six Feet Under –a memorable and beautiful ending to an amazing TV show… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNwARV9tPUw&feature=related)

5. Sonata for a Good Man from Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others)… probably the most powerful scene in a very powerful film. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r9W-FjyYss)

7. Tiny Dancer from Almost Famous... just try not to sing along!

8. The Red Violin… I love this movie and the tale it tells about this beautiful instrument over the years… there is tons of great violin music in this film. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz4nvFp8nQA&feature=related)

Jamie – I just want to thank you again… each week I think… oh my goodness… this is the BEST topic ever. Thanks so much for all your inspiration. I love sharing my favourites with you and discovering new favourites from all the wonderful suggestions of you and the other posters! ☺

hi jamie!

oh yah ~ loving the theme this week ... and loving everyone's suggestions so far!

i am going to suggest a few of a different note ...

when i hear carole king sing 'you've got a friend'
i totally am taken back in time (um, 1979 in time to be precise) to watching steve martin and carole king in a skit on 'saturday night live' ... i could only find the transcript to share so you would have to use your steve martin sense of humour in reading it ...
http://snltranscripts.jt.org/79/79arock.phtml
and imagine carole singing away ... *chortle*

keeping on the humour side of things (and i can't believe bee didn't think of this one ; ) ~ how about 'knights of the round table / camelot song' from monty python's holy grail ... be sure to clap along *wink*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfGpVcdqeS0

on a sweeter note, and tears form thinking of this one ~ is the theme song from the children's show 'little bear' ... it wouldn't matter what was happening ~ on hearing the first note of this song, i would stop everything and gather my boys to watch owl, cat, duck, hen, 'little bear' and of course, my favourite 'no feet' ~ the snake ... : )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjkfjdY-GDI&feature=related

and on my final note ...
iris dement's 'our town' is forever with us from the tv series 'northern exposure' ~ a witty, warm and wonderful story of these amazing characters living in a small town in the far north ... this song is how they bid farewell to this brilliant show ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pHuX9OA3RI

good night

Prairie Girl Studio said...

eeek ~ forgive me ...
i suppose there never is a 'final' note ... ; )

how could i possibly forget one of my all time fave movies ever ... 'waking ned devine' ... the song that opens the movie is 'the fisherman's blues' by the waterboys ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VKouBHarIo

and of course there is 'the ballad of ned devine'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJxEDDlpmiM
(i like how funkyarddogg includes the lyrics with his youtube postings ~ nice!)

... and on that note, i raise a parting glass : )

Oh Jaime I just love your lists...esp considering I'm terrible at making any music lists of my own ((sigh)).
